This is what feedback looks like

A graded Korean translation attempt: the learner's answer above the reference, each mistake annotated inline with an arrow to the fix, corrections grouped by category (particle, conjugation) with plain-language explanations, and the fully corrected sentence.

  • Your answer next to the reference. See how close you were before reading a single note.
  • Every mistake marked inline. The wrong particle is struck out with the fix right beside it: 커피을 becomes 커피를.
  • Explained in plain language, by category. “Since '커피' ends in a vowel, you must use the object particle '를' instead of '을'.” That's the real note from this attempt, not marketing copy.
  • The corrected sentence at the end. Read it back, then move on to the next prompt.

Why not just ask ChatGPT to correct me? ▼
You can, and it will do a decent job — once. A chatbot corrects your sentence and forgets you. Elephant keeps every correction in a searchable history, feeds your mistakes into your spaced repetition schedule so weak words come back sooner, and pulls example sentences from a shared corpus instead of inventing them on the spot — only sentences confirmed to be correct make the cut. The correction is the start, not the end.
Can I trust the corrections? How good is the AI at Korean? ▼
Corrections are AI-generated, so like any AI they are not infallible — and the grader is built to accept valid alternatives rather than force one 'right' answer. The example sentences are surer ground: they come from a shared corpus where only sentences confirmed to be correct are eligible, so you never study a broken example. And if you would rather a human check your work, you can share any attempt with a friend or teacher and keep their notes alongside it in Elephant.
What's free, and what does Premium cost? ▼
Sentence analysis, sentence search, flashcards, and translation practice are free forever, with no card required. Premium ($10/month) adds automatic AI corrections on every translation and pronunciation scoring; Supporter ($20/month) is for people who want to back the project. What level do I need to use Elephant? ▼
If you can read Hangul, you can start. Practice prompts are built from vocabulary you have already studied, so beginners get short, simple sentences and the difficulty grows with you instead of following a fixed curriculum.
Is there a mobile app? ▼
No, but Elephant is a progressive web app (PWA), so it works on any device with a browser. Install it on your home screen for an app-like experience on iOS and Android.
What courses does Elephant officially support? ▼
None officially, for now. You can create your own courses, and there is a simple built-in one to get started. I would rather not bolt someone else's textbook onto Elephant without their blessing — a lot of work goes into those, and I don't want to step on it.
What other features are planned for Elephant? ▼
A few things I want to build next: fill-in-the-blank grammar practice, number practice, and worksheets and classes for the classroom.
Why is it named Elephant? ▼
Short answer: I am uncreative. Long answer: I found the idea of an elephant mascot cute and couldn't come up with a name to support that idea. Also see the blog on the history of elephant.
Will Elephant make learning Korean easy? ▼
No. Learning a language will always be work, until Matrix-style brain uploads are invented.
Can I self-host Elephant? ▼
Not right now. Elephant runs on what its users collectively feed it, so a private instance would lose most of what makes it useful. That said — if you genuinely want your own deployment and have an insane budget to match, get in touch.

Elephant is (kind of) a solo project. I'm a Korean learner myself: I built it because I wanted a tool that gave me feedback on my own sentences and helped me practice — not just another flashcard app — and I study with it too.

It's meant to complement your studies, not replace your teacher, your course, or your Anki deck. Use it alongside the tools you already love (or despise as long as they help you).
